The practice was formed in 1984 by Chris Harvey as ‘Harvey Architects Partnership’ and steadily grew in stature and reputation employing a staff of 20 by the late 80’s. However, the recession of 1990 to 1992 hit hard and the team was drastically reduced forcing Chris to re-evaluate the practice and its workings. It was at this time that the practice name was abbreviated and ‘Chartered’ introduced becoming ‘HAP Chartered Architects’ still operating as a partnership. It was also decided to take the big step from drawing board to CAD and this was a key investment and contributor in the revival of the practice. In 1996 the practice moved to ‘The Orangery and Coach House’, 22 Amersham Hill, two buildings of character providing a creative atmosphere. HAP Chartered Architects were incorporated in 2003 becoming ‘HAP Chartered Architects Ltd’. The practice has continued to evolve and react to client expectations, technological advances and office requirements. In 2009 we again invested in CAD establishing BIM software and operations. The future growth potential of the practice was secured in 2011 with the acquisition of The Old Registry, 20 Amersham Hill with over 5000 sq ft of office space. The practice is now branded as ‘HAP Architects’ and is an RIBA Chartered Practice equipped to deliver a bespoke service to our clients both private and commercial.
At the end of 2017 Chris Harvey retired leaving his legacy in the capable hands of Alan Hooper. Alan has worked as a Director alongside Chris for many years and will continue uphold the service associated with the practice.
The practice has continued to build on its ethos of “understanding the brief and delivering the product of design”. We prepare for the project by taking an overview perspective depicted by our logo showing the team flying over the project, which enables us to navigate freely through the legislation, politics and building constraints of the 21st century. The practice combines its artistic flair with practical experience to deliver “innovative design with comprehensive technical solutions”. We aim to “add value” to all our projects and provide “clarity and understanding” throughout the design process. Investment in technology assists us in clearly presenting our schemes in various media and styles.
HAP Architects produce clever but affordable design solutions and have an in depth knowledge of a Local Planning Authorities, policies, objectives and motivations which are key to being successful in what we do, as is the ability to produce sometimes highly technical construction solutions cost effectively and without the need to go back to the planning drawing board. I have no hesitation in recommending HAP Architects to all of those developers who are looking for something better.
I have worked with HAP Architects on a number of projects / planning applications. They are approachable, easy to work with and knowledgeable of the planning requirements to achieve successful outcomes.
We have undertaken a number of residential development projects and planning applications mainly in the Buckinghamshire area with HAP Architects. It’s important to us to truly maximise the potential of our residential development sites whilst at the same time not getting involved in long winded, drawn out planning battles and appeals which are both very costly and very time consuming; sounds easy when written like this but those involved in residential property development know its anything but.
HAP Architects provided architectural design work for our family home. They are clearly passionate about what they do and very knowledgeable and experienced. The diversity of their experience certainly helps with ideas and solutions. Overall they are a great company to work with and highly recommended.
A huge thank you for all that you have put into our project, you have been very generous with your time and energies. The whole house fits very well together. You have created a house which it is a pleasure to live in and entertain our family and friends.
We have worked with HAP Architects on several oak framed house projects now. The practice has developed a good knowledge of how oak frames perform in service which is crucial to the longevity of the quality of the build.
We have used HAP Architects for a few planning applications and have always been impressed with their ability to look outside the box and deliver what we need when we need it.
I have done business with HAP Architects over a period of many years and can highly recommend their services as an Architect and of equal importance, their open and honest approach to business. Attention to detail is excellent and presentation standards are good too. The team at HAP Architects is all very capable, so quality standards are consistent. My most recent project has worked out very well indeed.
The entire team at HAP Architects deliver an excellent service which is centered around the needs of the client and focused on delivering exceptional innovative design which is practical to implement and cost effective. They are a pleasure to work with.

I have worked with HAP Architects through many developers and always found them good team players. Whether treated as an outside design team providing a service or embraced into the development team as a whole they seek to understand the client’s needs then together offer options.
