Practice History

The practice was formed in 1984 by Chris Harvey as ‘Harvey Architects Partnership’ and steadily grew in stature and reputation employing a staff of 20 by the late 80’s.  However, the recession of 1990 to 1992 hit hard and the team was drastically reduced forcing Chris to re-evaluate the practice and its workings.  It was at this time that the practice name was abbreviated and ‘Chartered’ introduced becoming ‘HAP Chartered Architects’ still operating as a partnership.  It was also decided to take the big step from drawing board to CAD and this was a key investment and contributor in the revival of the practice.  In 1996 the practice moved to ‘The Orangery and Coach House’, 22 Amersham Hill, two buildings of character providing a creative atmosphere.  HAP Chartered Architects were incorporated in 2003 becoming ‘HAP Chartered Architects Ltd’.  The practice has continued to evolve and react to client expectations, technological advances and office requirements.  In 2009 we again invested in CAD establishing BIM software and operations.  The future growth potential of the practice was secured in 2011 with the acquisition of The Old Registry, 20 Amersham Hill with over 5000 sq ft of office space.  The practice is now branded as ‘HAP Architects’ and is an RIBA Chartered Practice equipped to deliver a bespoke service to our clients both private and commercial.

Our Philosophy

Entering our 30th year the practice has continued to build on its ethos of “understanding the brief and delivering the product of design”.  We prepare for the project by taking an overview perspective depicted by our logo showing the team flying over the project, which enables us to navigate freely through the legislation, politics and building constraints of the 21st century.  The practice combines its artistic flair with practical experience to deliver “innovative design with comprehensive technical solutions”.  We aim to “add value” to all our projects and provide “clarity and understanding” throughout the design process.  Investment in technology assists us in clearly presenting our schemes in various media and styles.
